Playing for the Midlands side Dudley Phoenix team at the time, wing-half Joseph Flavell was one of the 15 non-travelling reserves for the Great Britain squad for the 1912 Olympics. An uncapped player, he moved to the Welsh club Hawarden after the Olympics and was called upon to represent the North against the South in the England amateur trial for uncapped players in November 1912. That turned out to be the nearest he came to gaining international honours.
