Biography

After playing for St Mark’s College, Frank Monk joined Chelsea in 1908 but never played in their first team. An all-round sportsman he was an excellent centre-half, who could also play at centre-forward when required. From Chelsea he went on loan to Salisbury City, his home-town team, before joining Southampton in 1910 and going on to play 20 Southern League games for the Saints. Monk won six England amateur caps, all in the calendar year of 1911, making his début against Wales on 18 February. He moved north and joined Glossop North End playing two Football League games in the second division. His début was against Hull City in September 1911 but the following month he moved back down south and joined Fulham. However, in one season, he never played in the Cottagers’ first team but during his time at Craven Cottage Monk was called up as a reserve for the 1912 Olympics although he never made the trip to Stockholm. Monk had a spell at Ilford, and briefly at Tottenham Hotspur, before finishing his career back at Salisbury City. His football appearances were considerably curtailed due to him remaining an amateur and sticking with his chosen profession of schoolteacher.
