Arthur Brown played 41 times in goal for Southampton in the Southern League between 1910 and 1912, making his final appearance in the 2-0 home defeat by Coventry City in the FA Cup on 13 January 1912. Despite being uncapped he was one of the non-travelling reserves for the 1912 Great Britain Olympic team. The son of an Isle of Wight grocer, he was better known as a civil engineer than footballer and in 1912 he moved to Canada where he worked on the building of the fourth Welland Canal. He returned to the UK in 1926 before moving to Singapore in the late 1920s when he worked on the building of a naval base at Seletar. He contracted malaria in 1932 and just a few days later, despite showing signs of recovery, died three days short of his 44th birthday. His death coincided with the opening of the new Welland Canal.
