Günter Dohrow

West German Günter Dohrow took part in the 1952 and 1956 Olympic Games but did not get out of the heats in his events. In Helsinki he had to rest for two days in bed after his heel was injured in training when he was spiked by his teammate Werner Lueg. Dohrow’s nickname was the “flying school teacher” as he was a school teacher in Berlin. He belonged to the greatest middle distance runners in West Germany in his era, placing eighth at the 1954 European Championships. He was German Champion in the 800 in 1953, and the 1,500 in 1956. He also had German second-place finishes at the nationals in the 1,500 in 1952, 1954 and 1958, and in 1961 and 1962 in the 3 x 1,000 relay.

Dohrow was also active in handball during his athletic career. He died after a short illness in the Behring Hospital in Berlin at the age of 81. Between 1954-75 he was married to non-Olympian sprinter Marianne Rothkegel.
