East German hurdler Wolfgang Fischer fled to West Germany at the end of 1953 and took part in the 1954 European Championships as a West German citizen. Through 1953 he had some podium finishes in the former GDR, but never won a national title. In West Germany he became champion in the 1955 400 hurdles. In 1963 Fischer married non-Olympian sprinter Renate Renz.
