Günter Gehmert placed 10th in the high jump with 1.90 metres at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He then became German Champion with his personal best (1.95 m) in 1939. He earned nine international caps in dual matches. During World War II Gehmert was injured in action and died in the field hospital in Montaigu, France. He was buried at the war cemetery Fort-de-Malmaison.
