Friedrich Gerdes reached the final of the javelin throw at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, placingly 17th and last. The policeman never managed to win a German Championship but was German Police Champion in 1939. Gerdes was killed in 1960 in a motor car accident in Berlin-Dahlem.
