Sprinter Gerd Hornberger won a bronze medal with the 4x100 relay at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, after being eliminated in the second round of the 100. He won the 1934 and 1938 European Championships with the 4x100 relay. Hornberger was German Champion in the 100 in 1936 and 1938, in the 200 in 1937, and with the 4x100 relay in 1936-37.
After World War II Hornberger became one of the most active sports administrators in Rhineland Palatinate, becoming chairman of the Regional Track and Field Association from 1948-70, and eventually its Honorary Chairman. From 1948-73 he was also a member of the Advisory Board of the German Athletics Federation. In 1959 he was appointed Head of the Delegation of German athletics teams.
Hornberger was honored with the Golden Ring from 1957-67, the highest award of the German Athletics Federation. In 1953 he was awarded as a generous and selfless promoter of the association of former active athletes with the “Hanns-Braun-Gedächtnispreis” (Memorial Prize). He also was honored for his support of German sports in general with the Federal Cross of Merit. By profession, he was the owner of a printing company based in his hometown Waldfischbach near Pirmasens.
