Triple jumper Erich John finished seventh at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, missing the final by only 2 centimetres. He never won a German title, but was runner-up in 1936 and fourth in 1934-35. In his youth Joch was an avid handball player. He was educated as a sports teacher and worked for years as a sports coach in Quedlinburg.
