Pole vaulter Günther Lohre came in ninth at the 1976 Montréal Olympic Games. He also participated in the 1983 World Championships (15th), the 1977 World Cup (6th), the 1978 and 1982 European Championships (11th and 7th), and the European Cups in 1975 (11th), 1977 (3rd), 1979 (4th), and 1981 (no height). Indoors he started in seven European Championships from 1975-82 with his best result in 1976 and 1979, when he finished fourth. Between 1975-84 Lohre won 18 West German titles, 9 each indoors and outdoors.
From 1979-83 Lohre was an athlete’s speaker with the West German Track and Field Association DLV. In 2009 he was elected vice-president of high-performance sport within the DLV. He was educated as a sports teacher and later continued changed careers to become a public relation manager. With a partner, in 1986 Lohre founded the PR agency “Roth & Lohre” which he left in 1999 to move into the IT industry. In 2000 he became a board member with an IT logistics company and in 2005 started a career as a freelance consultant for business development. Lohre married non-Olympian sprinter Dagmar Schenten in 1989 and their son Leo Lohre also became a nationally successful pole vaulter.
