Steeplechaser Willi Maier was eliminated in the heats at the 1972 and the 1976 Olympic Games in München and Montréal. He placed second at the 1973 European Cup, and domestically won three West German titles outdoors and one indoor title. His son Michael also became a long-distance runner.
