Decathlete Paul Meier came in sixth at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. One year later he had his greatest athletic moment, winning the bronze medal at the World Championships. After a series of injuries, which necessitated six surgeries, he retired in 1999. Meier also won European Cups in 1993 and 1995. He was awarded the Richard-Schauffele-Gedächtnispreisträger (Memorial Award) in 1992, and received the Sports Badge of North Rhine Westphalia in 1994. In 2004 he married well-known high jumper Heike Henkel-Redetzky. By profession he was a project engineer in plastics technologies and was employed by Microsoft Europe.
