Otto Neumann received a diploma in gymnastics and sports in 1939. He eventually was named professor and became director of the Institute of Physical Education in Karlsruhe and was Honorary Professor for Physical Education at the University of Heidelberg. His son Dr. Hannes Neumann was an avid basketball player and coached several German basketball teams, with which he earned several German championships, and he also became a professor of sports science.
Neumann won a silver medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games with the 4x400 relay, but did not reach the 400 metre semifinals. He was German 400 champion in 1922 and 1924, also winning with the relay in 1927-28, and in the 400 hurdles in 1928. Neumann participated in four international matches and then worked as a soccer coach for SV Waldhof Mannheim in 1939, after World War II for SV Amicitia 09 Viernheim.
