Horst-Rüdiger Schlöske

Horst-Rüdiger Schlöske, a 400 metre runner, was born under the name Pfau. In 1968 he took the name of his adoptive father and athletics coach Hermann Schlöske. In München 1972 Horst-Rüdiger came in fifth in the 400 and fourth with the 4x400 relay. At the 1969 European Championships, which were boycotted by West Germany concerning the scandal around former GDR runner Jürgen May, the relays were allowed to start, and Schlöske won a bronze medal with the 4x400 relay. In 1971 he added a gold and in 1974 a silver, both with the 4x400 relay. He never won a West German title, but Schlöske set a world record for 500 metres with 1:00.6 in 1973.

Horst-Rüdiger Schlöske was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf in 1968. He was trained as a porcelain painter and photo graphic designer, but later worked as an athletics coach, masseur and national health practitioner. In 1992 he moved to Tenerife. His son Roberto also became a 400 runner.
