Ludwig Uettwiller

Ludwig Uettwiller was born in Alsace, between 1870 and 1918 a part of Germany, but often and contentiously, a part of France. Uettwiller later became first a Swiss, and then a French citizen under the French name Octave Lucien Uettwiller. He studied chemistry at the École de Chimie in Mühlhausen and graduated in October 1912 with a doctorate in Chemistry. From 1914-19 he stayed in Spain as a Swiss citizen. In 1919 he was the Spanish Champion in hammer throw. He then moved to France and in 1920 founded a company for chemical analysis in Clamart near Paris. In 1939 the factory was handed over to his son André.

Ludwig Uettwiller participated in the 1908 London Olympics in the standing high jump (17th), and with unknown final rankings in the long jump, discus throw, hammer throw and freestyle javelin throw. In 1910 he was the first German to throw the hammer beyond 30 metres (32.30). In 1913 he headed the Swiss lists in the discus throw with 38.20.
