Long-distance runner Franz Wanderer did not finish the 1928 Amsterdam marathon. At 15.8 km he passed the control point in the lead, but did not appear at the next control point for unknown reasons. He won three consecutive German Championships between 1927 and 1929. From 1920-32 he was a member of the Reichswehr, and then until World War II Wanderer worked as a tax consultant assistant. His last known sign of life was in 1944 in Romania, where he went missing in action.
