Biography

Anastasios Andreou was a Greek-Cypriot athlete who is generally regarded as being the first person from Cyprus to compete at the modern Olympic Games. Andreou represented Cyprus at the 1896 Panhellenic Games where he won the 110 metres hurdles in a Games record of 20.1 seconds. Later the same year he represented Greece at the 1896 Athína Olympics as Cyprus was a protectorate of the United Kingdom at the time. Again he ran in the 110 metres hurdles but did not advance from his heat.

After the Olympics Andreou served in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 as a volunteer in the Greek Army. Andreou was a non-commissioned officer during the Battle of Velestino in April and May of 1897. In October of that year he returned home to Cyprus where he spent the rest of his life.
