The 1896 Panhellenic Games served as the selection event for Greek athletes ahead of the first edition of the modern Olympics. Alexandros Chalkokondylis had the perfect start when he won the Panhellenic titles in the 100 metres, 400 metres, and the long jump. Chalkokondylis’ winning marks in each event were also recognised as the first Greek national records. At the 1896 Athína Olympics Chalkokondylis competed in the 100 metres and the long jump but did not replicate his success from the Panhellenic Games after finishing fourth in the long jump and fifth in the 100 metres.
