Georgios Roumpanis represented Greece at three editions of the Olympic pole vault competition, being eliminated in the qualifying round in 1952 and 1960, but winning bronze in 1956. Having earlier taken silver at the 1955 Mediterranean Games, behind Italian Giulio Chiesa, he was also selected as the Greek flagbearer in the 1956 Opening Ceremony. After retiring from active competition in 1961, Roumpanis, previously a student at UCLA, worked as a management consultant in the United States. He eventually returned to Greece and was involved in several administrative capacities in sport, including the founding of the Association of Greek Olympians in 1985, with Dimitrios Thanopoulos. Roumpanis’ brother Aristidis was an Olympian in field athletics and basketball at the 1952 Helsinki Games.
