Guatemala made its Olympic début in 1952 when they sent a delegation of 21 athletes to the Helsinki Games with track sprinter Graviola Ewing being their only female competitor. Ewing was a keen athlete at school where she competed in track running and basketball. Her talent in the former was soon noticed, with her earning a spot on the national track and field team. She competed at the 1950 Central American and Caribbean Games where she won silver in the 4 × 100 metres relay, along with bronze in both the 50 and 100 metres. A year later she ran in the 100 and 200 metres at the Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, which was used as preparation for the Olympics. Ewing ran in the 100 and 200 metres at the Helsinki Games where she became the first woman to represent Guatemala at the Olympics.
