Vaidyanathan achieved a career-best singles ranking of #147 in the world in May 1997 and a doubles ranking of #115 in the world in July 2001. Although she never won a WTA title, she did win two singles and 10 doubles title on the ITF Circuit between 1996 and 2001. In 1998 she had her best performance at a Grand Slam when she reached the second round at the Australian Open, but lost to Magdalena Grzybowska in straight sets. The same year she also won bronze in the mixed doubles at the Asian Games in Bangkok, partnering Mahesh Bhupathi. Two years later Vaidyanathan paired with Manisha Malhotra in the doubles at the Sydney Olympics, but lost in the first round to the Australian pair of Jelena Dokic and Rennae Stubbs.
