Biography

József Apró’s athletic career began in the mid-1930s. The first affiliation of his athletic career was the Miskolc Railway Sport Club, followed by Lokomotiv. His favourite events were the middle-distance and steeplechase races. Apró achieved his first outstanding result in 1948 with two championship bronze medals; one in the 1,500 metres, and the other in the 3,000 metres steeplechase. A year later he upgraded his bronze medal in the 1,500 metres to a silver. In 1950 he won the national championship titles in both the 800 and the 1,500 metres.

A year before the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Apró began to focus on the 3,000 metres steeplechase. In this discipline he competed in Helsinki, finishing in ninth place. After the Olympics he spent another year on the racetrack, before retiring due to a series of injuries. In civilian life he worked as an official of the Hungarian Railway.
