Biography

Jenő Bakos competed as an athlete for Vasas from 1946 to 1950, for Honvéd of Budapest from 1950 to 1954, and for Vörös Lobogó of Budapest in 1955–56, primarily in middle-distance events. From 1949 to 1953 Bakos won the Hungarian championship title in the 800 metres four times. In 1948 and 1949 he was a member of the 4 × 800 and the 4 × 1500 metres relay teams, and in 1949 he was a member of the cross-country and the 5000 metres championship teams. From 1952 to 1954 he achieved three national records in the 800 metres, with his best result in 1954 being 1 minute 49.9 seconds, making him the first Hungarian to run under 1 minute 50 seconds.

Between 1949 and 1954 Bakos competed for the Hungarian national team nine times. He finished fifth in the 800 metres at the 1951 World University Championships in Berlin. A year later he participated in the Helsinki Olympics, where he reached the semi-finals in the 800 metres.

Bakos died young, barely thirty years old. According to his death certificate the cause was listed as an acute carbon monoxide poisoning.
