Kálmán Egri started his sports career in his hometown, in the colors of Hódmezővásárhelyi TVE. On June 15, 1922, he made his debut at the Southern District Athletics Championships in Szeged. He won the discus throw (37.48 m) in the youth class and the shot put with a youth district record (12.75 m). In July, he won a silver medal in the national championship in the shot put (12.86 m). On October 1, he recorded the first 13m post-war shot putting result while winning the trophy of the State Prize in Budapest. As an MAC athlete, he was been selected eight times for the national team. In 1928 he had high hopes for his participation in the Olympic Games in Amsterdam, and was expected to reach the finals and possibly win a medal. Egri’s performance was disappointing in Amsterdam and he missed qualification for the final, but a few months later he rebounded to break the national record of 47.37 meters at the Hungarian-Italian national team meeting. He carried the Hungarian flag at the opening ceremony of the Olympics. He was a civil lawyer and secretary to the Minister for Public Welfare.
