Hungarian basketball was as its peak in the 1950s, and János Simon was one of the key players of the national team. The Hungarians were particularly successful at the European Championships. In 1955, despite a loss to Czechoslovakia, they took the title, after having been runners-up in 1953. Simon, a 1.94 m-long center also played at two Olympics, but never qualified for the World Championships. In club play, Simon won no less than 14 Hungarian titles with his club, Honvéd. He later also coached the side, winning another five titles.
