Mór Kóczán started his sports career in Pápa, where he also completed theological studies. Due to his outstanding athletic achievements, he joined the Budapest Torna Club (BTC), and then FTC. He competed in javelin, discus and shot under the pseudonym Miklós Kovács. He took part in the 1908 London and 1912 Stockholm Olympics, and in the latter of the two years, won a bronze medal, and became the first non-Scandinavian to win an Olympic javelin medal. Kóczán was the first English (AAA) javelin champion in 1914, Hungarian champion in 1916 and was Czechoslovakian champion in 1920. In 1924, at the age of 40, he participated in the Paris Olympics, representing Czechoslovakia.
In 1907, Kóczán became a clergyman and pastor, and after World War II settled in Hungary in Göd, where he worked as a pastor. He lived the remainder of his life in Göd, where he actively participated in local sporting activities.
