Gergely Kulcsár started his sports career as goalkeeper, first in football then in handball. He was 17 when he switched to athletics as a javelin thrower. From 1955-72 Kulcsár earned 55 international caps. He was a 12-time Hungarian champion in javelin, improving the Hungarian record several times, and was the first Hungarian javelin thrower to reach 80 metres.
Kulcsár participated in four Olympics between 1960 and 1972, winning three medals (1960 bronze, 1964 silver, 1968 bronze) and was the flag bearer of the Hungarian team at the Opening Ceremonies three times (1964, 1968, 1972). In both 1958 and 1966, he won a bronze medal at the European Championships and he won three medals at the Universiade (silver: 1959, gold: 1961, bronze: 1963).
In 1957, Kulcsár graduated from the College of Physical Education as a teacher, and then became an athletics coach. From 1960 he was a physical education teacher at the Budapest University of Medicine. He was an assistant professor at the College of Physical Education starting in 1968, and an assistant professor at the university since 1975. Kulcsár later became head throws coach for the Hungarian national team until 1980. Among his pupils, Miklós Németh won the gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. From 1981 to 1993, with a minor break, Kulcsár was the throwing coach of the Kuwaiti national team.
