Biography

Sándor László started his sports career in cross-country skiing, then moved to long-distance running, before finally taking up walking. László started in the Bp. Levente Association (1937-1944), continued in the Bp. Postás (1945-1949), and then finished his competitive career in the Bp. Dózsa (1950-1955). László set 26 national records and won the individual national championship five times. He competed in the national team between 1949 and 1954.

László took part in two Olympics, finishing 13th in London in 1948 and 12th four years later in Helsinki in the 50 kilometer walk. He achieved the greatest success of his career in May 1952 when he set a world record in the 30 kilometers (2:27:46.2). A year earlier he achieved a time better than the then world record in the 50 kilometers (4:31:56.0); however, it was ultimately not certified by the international association. László was still competing when he got a taste of coaching. He said goodbye to the coaching profession in 1973 but did not part with his beloved sport even after that.

Personal Best: 50kmW – 4-31:56 (1951).
