Egon Solymossy started his sports career as a footballer, like his father, István Solymosi (Schulek), a goalkeeper for DVTK, and after his speed was noticed, he found himself among the athletes at the age of 15. Between 1940 and 1945 Solymossy was an athlete of Diósgyőri Mávag, then until 1948 of PVSK, and finally of Pécsi Lokomotív. During his career Solymossy achieved two individual (200 and 400 metres in 1948) and three relay championship titles (4 x 400m in 1949, 1952 and 1953). Between 1941 and 1954 Solymossy was a member of the Hungarian national team with him competing at the 1946 Oslo and 1954 Bern European Championships, as well as two World University Games.
In 1952 Solymossy was selected to compete at the Olympics in Helsinki. Hungary had great hopes of a medal in the relay, but the expected result was not achieved, as the relay team was eliminated from the competition. So, even though they would have otherwise advanced with a time of 3:13.8, the Olympics were over for them. Solymossy coached at PVSK from 1954 and then became the head coach of PMSC. Among his students, Endre Lépold participated at the 1976 Montréal Olympics.
Personal Best: 400 – 48.2 (1953).
