Between 1928 and 1935, Lajos Somló was an athlete at Ferencvárosi Torna Club (FTC) and then until 1944 at Magyar Athletic Club. In 1930 he won a Hungarian championship in the 4x100 metre relay, while in 1934 and 1940 he was the Hungarian champion in triple jump, his primary event. He was the first Hungarian triple jumper to better 15 metres.
Between 1934 and 1940 Somló earned five caps. In 1934, he finished ninth in the European Championship in the triple jump, and he competed at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he finished in 12th place in the triple jump. During World War II, he suffered a severe shoulder injury on the Eastern Front, which effectively ended his athletic career.
