Jenő Szalay started competing in the colors of Move BSE in 1924 and he improved the Hungarian record of 300m in his first season. Between 1928 and 1933, as an athlete at BBTE, he won 10 Hungarian championship titles in 4 × 100-meter(4x) and 4 × 400-meter (6x) relays. In 1927 he won a sprint triathlon (100m, 150m and 200m). He competed at the 1928 Summer Olympics in the 400-meters. He finished 4th in the first round and did not qualified for the quarterfinal. After completing his sports career, he worked at the Ministry of Finance.
