István Tatár ran for Hungary in the 4x100 metre relay at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, with the team finishing eighth in the final. He competed at both the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, running the 100 metres and sprint relays at both Games. Tatár also ran for Hungary at the 1987 World Championships and the 1982 and 1986 European Championships. During his career Tatár helped Hungarian relay teams twice set national records, with 38.67 for the 4x100 in 1986 and 1:21.73 for the 4x200 in 1982. He competed for Budapest Honvéd Sports Association, and later coached there, being affiliated with the club for over 40 years.
