József Várszegi was an athlete with TFSC (from 1930), Magyar Athletic Club (from 1934), Toldi Miklós SE (in 1945), Goldberger SE (from 1946), and Vasas (from 1950). He competed in discus and hammer throw but his best results were in the javelin throw. Between 1932 and 1952, apart from 1944, he won all the Hungarian Championships. He improved the Hungarian record six times and was the first Hungarian javelin thrower to throw over 70 metres. His last record (72.78) stood for 17 years.
From 1932 to 1952, Várszegi earned 42 international caps. He competed at three Olympics, finishing eighth in 1936 and third in 1948, while in 1952 he did not qualify for the final. Várszegi finished fifth at the 1934 European Championships, placing third in 1938. He finished first at the World University Championships in 1933 and 1947 and was second in 1937. He retired from active sports in 1952.
In 1934, Várszegi earned a physical education degree from the College of Physical Education. Even during his active career, he was a physical education teacher and a sports manager at the Goldberger factory. After his retirement, he was manager of the Tata training camp and worked as a coach for Vasas and then Bp. Honvéd.
