In 1951, he won the first Delhi Marathon, came in second at the Indian National Championships, and came in third at the inaugural Asian Games. The following year, he won both the Delhi Marathon and the national championships, which led to his selection for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he finished 52nd among 66 competitors due to a leg entry. Nonetheless, he won the Delhi Marathon the following year and came in third at the national championships.
Singh was selected for the 1954 Asian Games, but as the marathon was not held at this edition, he did not participate in the tournament. His final competitive year was 1955, after which he began working as a physical education coach and served in the administration of his sport. He also helped carry the torch in the relays for the 1964 and 2004 Summer Olympics and retired from teaching in 1992.
