Phil Conway

Phil Conway attended Rockwell College, where he excelled in both rugby and athletics. In rugby he played on the school’s junior cup team for two years, and also played on the senior cup team for two years. He won one discus and two shot put titles at the Irish Schools’ Athletics Championships. After Rockwell, Philip took a year off and then attended Boston University.

In September 1971 he returned to the USA to study for a master’s degree in education at Springfield College. In 1973 he joined the staff at Belvedere College in Dublin as head of physical education and remained there for the next 35 years until his retirement in 2008. He first competed for Blackrock AC in Dublin, but joined Crusaders AC in 1966 and, along with winning Irish junior titles, he won five Irish shot put titles (1966-67, 1969, 1971-72), six Irish discus titles (1966-67, 1969-70, 1974, 1978) and one hammer title (1969), and also won the British AAA junior discus title in 1966.

Coaching at Belvedere College, his athletics team won the College of Science Cup for the school’s first ever time in 1996, and then won it for 16 of the next 17 years, missing only 1998. Conway was physical fitness trainer to the Tipperary hurling team in 1989 when they won the All-Ireland Championship.
