Biography

When Gerry McIntyre took part in his first full marathon at Finglas, Ireland, in August 1960 he won the AAUE title in 2-27:50 to break Bertie Messitt’s Irish record. Four weeks later, McIntrye was the highest-placed Irishman in the Olympic marathon in a personal best 2-26:93, and his 22nd place was the highest by an Irishman in the Olympic marathon at the time. The race was won by the barefooted runner Abebe Bikila in a world best time.

Both McIntyre’s parents were were born in Dublin, but he was born in England and spent most of his life there. He did, however, wear the Irish vest at the 1960 and 1961 International Cross-Country Championships, as well as the Roma (Rome) Olympics.

Personal Best: Mar – 2-26:03 (1960).
