Con O'Callaghan

Con O’Callaghan was brought up in Kanturk as a member of Ireland’s most notable athletic families, alongside his brothers Pat O’Callaghan and Seán, who were active in athletics and football. In his youth, he played rugby and football locally for Cork and Kanturk-based teams. O’Callaghan was the Irish decathlon champion in 1928 when he was chosen to represent Ireland on the athletics delegation at the Amsterdam Olympics in that event. He also won a gold medal at the Tailteann Games in that same year. Following his Olympic appearance, he won two additional championships in shot put in 1936 and 1937 before retiring from athletics in the 1940s. A detective with Garda Síochána by career, he was also active in athletics competitions within the force.
