Biography

In the 1930s Kristján Vattnes was one of the best all-round track and field athletes in Iceland. Vattnes won multiple national titles with four in the shot put (1935–38), four in the discus (1936–39), three in the javelin (1935–37), two pentathlon titles (1936–37), and one in the high jump (1938). He was selected to compete in the javelin at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but could only tie for 22nd with three other athletes who all had a best throw of 52.00 metres. Vattnes also had the honour of being the flag bearer for Iceland at the Opening Ceremony. After his athletics career he worked as a police officer in Reykjavík from 1939 to 1963.
