Biography

Paola Paternoster was a weight thrower who threw the discus at the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, and the javelin at Melbourne in 1956. She also competed domestically in the high jump and pentathlon. Paternoster won 12 Italian Championships, winning the high jump in 1955; the discus in 1955-57; the javelin in 1956-57, and 1959-61; and the pentathlon in 1954-56. Paternoster set four Italian records in the discus in 1956, and was the first Italian over 50 metres. She also set Italian records in the high jup (4), shot put (3), and javelin throw (3). Paternoster later became a physical education teacher.

Personal Bests: DT – 47.04 (1956); JT – 47.96 (1957).
