Maura Viceconte was a marathon runner who placed 12th in that event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, after failing to finish at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Her greatest international medal came with a bronze at the 1998 European Championships. However, Viceconte won several major city marathons. She was champion at Venice in 1995, the 1997 Monaco Marathon, the 1998 Italian Marathon in Carpi, the 1999 Roma Marathon, the 2000 Wien (Vienna) Marathon, the 2001 Praha Marathon, and the 2003 Napoli Marathon.
On the track Viceconte was 12th at the 10,000 metres at the 2002 European Championships. She was Italian Champion in the 10K in 2002 and the half-marathon 2000-01. She set the Italian record for 10K with 31:05.57 in 2000, a mark which stood through 2018.
In February 2019, Viceconte took her own life, committing suicide by hanging herself.
