Born in Milano, Fernando Altimani was the first of the many great Italian walkers, finishing third at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics in the 10 km walk. He set many world best performances in events not recognized by the IAAF (World Athletics). Wounds sustained in World War I prevented him from competing at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics. Altimano later became a typographer with La Gazzetta dello Sport.
