Born in 1936 in Sardinia, Antonino Ambu featured in the 1960s as a distance runner with the clubs Fiamme Oro, Pro Sesto and Snia Lilion. He won 34 individual Italian titles. Ambu competed at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics in the marathon, while he won gold in the marathon at the 1967 Mediterranean Games in 2-21:31.0. Ambu’s best marathon time was 2-18:04, at Boston in 1967 and he won 37 international caps from 1955-69.
