Salvatore Antibo was one of the greatest Italian distance runners in the second half of 20th century. He is best remembered for his memorable 5K / 10K double at the 1990 European Championships in Split in spite of a fall in the 5,000. Coached by Gaspare Polizzi, Antibo placed fourth in the 10,000 at Los Angeles in 1984 in the race dominated by Alberto Cova. Antibo was third in the same event at the 1986 European Championships and in 1988, at the Seoul Olympics, he won a silver medal behind the Moroccan Brahim Boutayeb.
In 1989 Antibo won the 5,000 in the Europa Cup and the 10,000 in the World Cup and, in the same season, ran the second fastest 10K ever, with 27:16.50 in Helsinki. In 1991 he again won the 5,000 at the Europa Cup. He capped off his career with a fourth place in the 10K at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. From 1981-93 Antibo earned 33 international caps. As of August 2019 he is still the Italian record holder in both the 5,000 (13:05.59 on 18 July 1990 in Bologna) and 10,000 (27:16.50).
Personal Bests: 5000 – 13:05.59 (1990); 10000 – 27:16.50 (1989).
