Entering track and field athletics by pure chance, Orlando Bianchini was first coached in the 1970s by Walter Bernardini and developed his potential in hammer throw under Gino Brichese. After being unable to participate at the 1976 Olympics due to pneumonia, his highlights were his 4th place at the 1984 Olympics and a silver medal – behind Gian Paolo Urlando - at the 1983 Mediterranean Games in Casablanca.
Bianchini’s personal best was 77.94, which was at that time the national record, and he won the 1985 Italian title. From 1975-1987 he earned 34 international caps. After retirement, he become an osteopath.
