Biography

In the space of 10 years, Pippo Cindolo earned 46 international caps in distance running. He was the Italian record holder at 5,000 metres with 13:50.8 (1969) while his personal best in the 10K was 28:27.05, done while finishing third at the 1974 European Championships in Roma, where he was also seventh in the marathon. When he turned 30, Cindolo dedicated himself to the marathon. He placed fourth at the 1975 Fukuoka Marathon, running 2-11:45 for an Italian record that lasted until 1981.

Cindolo had bad luck in his two Olympic marathons. At the 1976 Montréal Games he was among the favorites but after a very good start, he injured his leg at 10 km and had to withdraw. Four years later he was attacked by a dog while training, breaking an arm in the fall. Cindolo was Italian marathon champion in 1974-76 as well as in the 10,000 from 1969-75, and in the 5K in 1974-75.

Cindolo later became President of the Federazione Italiana Educatori Fisici e Sportivi and was a member of the faculty of Scienze Motorie of the Urbino University.

Personal Bests: 10000 – 28:27.05 (1974); Mar – 2-11:45 (1975).
