Umberto Colombo was the first Italian sprinter to compete at the Olympic Games, running sprints in 1900. He became noticed nationally in 1898 when he won all 18 major races he entered, including the Italian Championship in Torino. At the Paris Olympics Colombo ran the 100 and 400 metres, but did not advance beyond the first round in either event. He was entered in two hurdles events and the long jump, but did not start those events. Colombo continued to compete for a few years after Paris, but retired from track competition in 1904 when he was 24-years-old.
