Olympic finalist and multiple national record holder Luigi Conti was a symbol of sporting excellence for the Lecco area at an international level. After starting his career competing for the Army, Conti chose to move to Schio, where he trained under the expert guidance of Mario Lanzi, to refine his technical and competitive qualities.
Conti wrote many chapters in Italian athletics, reaching the peak of his career with his participation in the 1960 Roma Olympics. On that occasion, he managed to qualify for the 5,000 metres final. It was the crowning moment of his career, and after setting a personal best 14:01.55 in his heat, went on to finish 12th in the final.
Conti represented Italy on 24 occasions, and was dominant in the long-distance events, where he held the Italian 5,000 metres record for six years, from 1959-65. Additionally, he set national records in the 3,000 (8:12.4) and 10,000 metres (29:43.2). He won three 5,000 national titles (1959-60, 1963) and two 10,000 titles (1960 and 1963).
Personal Best: 5000 – 14:01.55 (1960).
