Born in Roma and coached by Sandro Donati, the owner of a shop of sports equipment, Alessio Faustini was a top long-distance runner with personal bests of 13:49 in the 5,000 metres and 28:39.25 in the 10,000 metres.
The brightest moment of Faustini’s athletics career was at the 1983 Summer Universiade marathon, where he won the gold medal in Edmonton. Although he withdrew from the 1991 World Championships marathon in Tokyo, he reached his personal best in the 1992 Olympic year with 2-11:03 on 20 April in Torino. The Barcelona marathon was not the best race of his career, however, as he finished only 44th with a time over 2 hours and 20 minutes. From 1981-1992 he earned 13 international caps.
