Pier Luigi Gatti was an Italian triple jumper who first distinguished himself at 19-years-old with a 14.00 metre mark in 1956. He débuted with the national team the following year with a third place in the “Six Nations” and in the Trieste’s bilateral meeting with Sweden. Gatti’s great rival was Enzo Cavalli, the first world-class Italian triple jumper, although it was mostly in Cavalli’s favor. Gatti earned 31 international caps from 1957-69.
Nationally Cavalli won four Italian titles in the triple jump with victories in 1957, 1960, 1964, and 1967 and one long jump title in 1966. He set a national record with 15.39 m on 11 May 1958 in Genova, which was equalled nine days later by Cavalli at Athina.
