Giuseppe Gerbi

Giuseppe Gerbi was a steeplechaser, long- and middle-distance runner, and marathoner in the 1980s. Coached for his whole career by Antonio Madaro, domestically he won four Italian titles: 3,000 metres indoor and 5,000 metres outdoor in 1976 and two marathons in Ferrara 1982 (2-11:25) and Roma 1983 (2-15:11).

In the 3,000 metres steeplechase, the top Italian athlete was Mariano Scartezzini who, as a soldier of a NATO country, had not been allowed to make the Olympics in Moskva (on 8 August, shortly after the Games, he achieved 8:12.5 in Roma). Gerbi was his substitute in this event and reached the final, where he finished in 6th place in 8:18.47, which was a national record for only six days. From 1976 to 1983 Gerbi won 21 international caps. After his active athletics career, he graduated in medicine with specialization in sports medicine and orthopaedics.
